Objective

The class will concentrate on distributed computer systems and the functions of such systems. Important topics will include naming, security, remote procedure call, networks, concurrency, transactions, parallel computing, shared memory, message passing, and scale.

Grading

Mid-term 20%, final 20%, research paper 30%, reading reports 20%, quizzes up to 10%, up to 10% bonus for class participation. Grades will not be calculated on a curve.

Attendance

Absence does not change the due date of an assignment. Missed exams will receive a failing grade without an official university accepted and verified excuse (e.g., medical). No make-up exams. All course materials/handouts are available online through the course home page http://gost.isi.edu/555

Save all returned exams and papers until the course grade has been received. Report grading errors to the instructor.
